Conserving Energy

Topic: Examine the means of conserving energy

Strand: EnvironmentSub-strand: Conserving Energy
Indicator: B8.1.1.2.1. Examine the means of conserving energyContent Standard: B8.1.1.2. Analyze the sources and ways of conserving energy in Ghana
Performance Indicator: Learners can discuss means of conserving energyT.L.R.(s): LED bulb, Switchable power strip, Sample ECG electricity bill
Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Start the lesson with a recap of the previous lesson. Allow learners to reflect on what they learnt from the previous lesson and the homework relating to ways of conserving energy.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Learners compare the efficient-lighting information on the LED bulb with a teacher-provided example of a less efficient bulb. They practise switching the Switchable power strip off when simulated appliances are not in use and explain how this prevents wasted standby energy. Groups read the consumption and charge sections of the Sample ECG electricity bill and predict how the demonstrated actions could reduce use and cost. They prepare a short household energy-conservation message using evidence from all three resources.
Phase 3plenary / reflections
Ask learners series of questions to review their understanding of the lesson Ask learners to summarize what they have learnt
