Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Begin with a brief storytelling session where learners listen to a short story and identify the emotional high points. Discuss the importance of conjunctions in linking ideas within a story. Engage learners in a quick exercise where they identify different types of conjunctions in sentences provided on the board.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Oral Language: Have students work in pairs to retell the story they heard using their own words and identifying the climax. Conduct a group discussion where learners share their thoughts on how conjunctions helped improve the flow of the story. Reading: Guide learners through a passage, highlighting and discussing the sections leading to the climax. Have students independently read a short story and underline sentences that use conjunctions effectively. Writing: Ask learners to write a short paragraph describing an exciting event, ensuring they use conjunctions to connect their ideas. Provide learners with a story prompt and have them write a continuation, focusing on building towards a climax. Writing Conventions: Review different types of conjunctions and their uses in connecting ideas. Conduct a written exercise where learners combine sentences using appropriate conjunctions.
Phase 3plenary / reflections
Oral Language: Reflect on how effectively learners used conjunctions during storytelling and identify areas for improvement. Reading: Assess how well students identified the climax in the stories they read and discuss their strategies. Writing: Review learners' written paragraphs for the use of conjunctions and the effectiveness of their story climaxes. Writing Conventions: Have students share examples of sentences they improved by using conjunctions and reflect on the difference it made.
