Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Engage students in a warm-up activity by sharing a story that uses both verbal and non-verbal cues, and ask students to identify these cues. Play a short video clip with muted sound and have students guess the emotions and actions based on the body language of the characters. Conduct a quick oral quiz where students use gestures to indicate the correct answers to simple questions. Ask students to share their favorite story and express it using a combination of voice modulation and gestures to emphasize key parts.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Oral Language: Conduct a classroom activity where students practice using gestures and facial expressions to enhance their storytelling. Have students work in pairs to role-play a dialogue, focusing on using non-verbal cues to convey meaning. Reading: Guide students in a reading activity where they pause and use self-correction strategies to improve understanding of the text. Facilitate a reading circle where students take turns reading aloud and use context clues to self-correct any misread words. Writing: Ask students to draft a script for a radio or TV presentation, focusing on clear and engaging content. Have students collaborate to create a storyboard for a TV performance, ensuring that their ideas are well-organized and informative. Using Writing Conventions: Conduct a spelling bee activity focusing on phonically irregular words, encouraging students to spell them correctly. Organize a word hunt game where students find and correctly spell irregular words from a provided list. Extensive Reading: Assign a reading challenge where students choose a book to read and summarize, focusing on key themes and personal reflections. Have students form book clubs to discuss and summarize age-appropriate books, sharing insights with the class.
Phase 3plenary / reflections
Oral Language: Reflect on the effectiveness of using verbal and non-verbal cues in today's activities, asking students to share which cues they found most effective and why. Reading: Assess students' understanding of self-correction strategies by having them reflect on a challenging part of the text they read and how they overcame it. Writing: Conduct a peer review session where students provide feedback on each other's radio or TV presentations, focusing on clarity and organization. Using Writing Conventions: Have students reflect on their spelling progress by identifying the most challenging phonically irregular word they learned and how they mastered it. Extensive Reading: Encourage students to share a brief reflection on how the book they read has influenced their thoughts or perspectives.
