Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Engage students in a simple conversation about their favorite books and ask them to make polite requests to borrow a book from a friend. Introduce a fun word wall with high-frequency words and challenge students to read them aloud as quickly as possible. Have students participate in a storytelling circle where they share a short story using pictures as prompts.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Oral Language: Conduct a role-play session where students practice making and responding to polite requests in various scenarios. Facilitate a listening activity where students identify polite requests in recorded dialogues and respond appropriately. Reading: Create a reading challenge where students identify and read over 200 high-frequency words from a word list. Have students pair up to read a passage aloud, focusing on fluency and correct pronunciation of high-frequency words. Writing: Ask students to write short stories based on a series of pictures, using simple sentences to describe each event. Provide a set of images and guide students to write descriptive sentences that narrate what is happening in each picture. Using Writing Conventions: Provide a list of phonically irregular words and have students practice spelling them through interactive spelling games. Conduct a spelling bee focusing on words that do not follow standard phonetic rules, encouraging peer support. Extensive Reading: Assign age-appropriate books for students to read and summarize the main ideas and themes in small groups. Facilitate a book review session where students present summaries of books they have read to the class.
Phase 3plenary / reflections
Oral Language: Reflect on how students effectively used polite requests and responses during the lesson, discussing areas for improvement. Reading: Assess students' ability to recognize and read high-frequency words fluently and accurately during a timed reading activity. Writing: Review the picture stories created by students, focusing on their use of simple sentences to convey clear events. Using Writing Conventions: Evaluate students' progress in spelling phonically irregular words through a short spelling quiz. Extensive Reading: Have students share one thing they learned or enjoyed from their book summaries, reinforcing the culture of reading.
