Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Introduce a word game where students say a word and others have to delete, add, or substitute a sound to form a new word. Engage students in a brief discussion about the importance of using capital letters and when to use them. Read a short, age-appropriate story to the class, emphasizing the use of proper nouns and capital letters.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Reading: Students participate in a sound manipulation activity, where they identify and say new words by changing sounds in given words. Conduct a guided reading session focusing on identifying proper nouns in a text. Writing: Guide students in writing their names using both capital and small letters, ensuring correct capitalization for the first letter. Provide students with a list of common objects and guide them to write each word using appropriate capitalization. Using Writing Conventions: Conduct an activity where students rewrite sentences, correcting any capitalization errors. Lead a discussion on different types of proper nouns and have students provide examples from their daily lives. Extensive Reading: Allow students to choose an age-appropriate book from the class library and read silently, noting any new words or interesting uses of capitalization. Facilitate a group reading session where students take turns reading aloud, focusing on fluency and expression.
Phase 3plenary / reflections
Reading: Reflect on the new words learned during the lesson and discuss how altering sounds can change word meanings. Writing: Assess students' written sentences for correct use of capital and small letters, providing feedback on their letter formation. Using Writing Conventions: Review students' understanding of capitalization rules by asking them to identify and correct errors in sample sentences.
