Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Play a simple name game where each learner says their name and one interesting fact about themselves. Engage the class in a call-and-response activity using common greetings and introductions. Use flashcards with pictures and words to introduce basic naming words related to family and familiar places.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Oral Language: Students work in pairs to practice introducing themselves and asking simple questions about their partner's name and favorite things. Conduct a circle time activity where each learner introduces a family member and describes one thing they like about them. Reading: Guide the learners through a phonics activity focusing on identifying and sounding out the letters of the alphabet. Read a short picture book with the class, encouraging learners to point out and say the names of familiar objects and places. Writing: Provide students with a tracing worksheet to practice baseline penmanship by tracing letters and simple words. Have learners draw and label a picture of their family, using the correct naming words. Writing Conventions: Introduce a naming word treasure hunt, where students find and list objects in the classroom, categorizing them as people, places, or things. Organize a noun sorting activity, where students group words into categories: people, places, and things.
Phase 3plenary / reflections
Oral Language: Reflect on the introductions made earlier, discussing how it feels to share personal information and learning about others. Reading: Have students share which words or letter sounds they found challenging and discuss strategies to improve identification and pronunciation. Writing: Allow learners to showcase their drawings and sentences, providing feedback on penmanship and correct usage of naming words. Writing Conventions: Conduct a class review of the noun wall, asking learners to explain why certain words are categorized as people, places, or things.
