Introduction

Every week in Ghana, millions of people gather in churches, mosques and shrines. Worship is how people show honour, love and thanks to God. It also teaches good values for daily life.

1. What Is Worship?

Worship: Showing honour, reverence and love to God through prayer, praise, giving and obedience.

Worship can be done together with others (congregational worship) or alone (private worship), for example when a person prays quietly at home before sleeping.

3. Moral Lessons from Worship

Values taught by worship
ValueHow worship teaches it
disciplinearriving on time; following order of service or prayer times
humilitybowing, kneeling and prostrating before God
unitypeople of all backgrounds worship together
cleanlinesswashing before prayer; wearing clean clothes
generositygiving offerings, tithes, zakat and sacrifices
obediencefollowing God's commands
gratitudethanking God for life and blessings

Worship reminds people that God sees everything, so they try to live honestly. It brings people together and builds friendship. It gives hope and comfort in times of trouble. People who worship sincerely should show the values they learn in their behaviour at home, school and work.

4. Behaving Well During Worship

  • Arrive early and dress decently.
  • Keep quiet and listen attentively.
  • Switch off or silence your phone.
  • Respect the place of worship and other worshippers.
  • Respect people of other religions and their places of worship.

Ghana is a country where Christians, Muslims and traditional believers live together peacefully. Families often include members of different religions. Leaders of different faiths attend each other's important events, such as Christmas, Eid and festivals, and pray together on national days. This religious tolerance is something to be proud of and to protect.
