Revise with learners on soil nutrients as one of the main resources that improve soil fertility.
Brainstorm learners for the meaning of organic plant nutrients. Organic plant nutrients are obtained from natural sources and also contain carbon. Inorganic plant nutrients are chemicals and doesn't contain carbon.

Introduce the lesson by sharing the performance indicators. | Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment Learners observe the Compost sample, NPK fertiliser packet and Sealed cow-dung sample and describe their visible physical characteristics such as colour, texture, form and packaging without opening the sealed cow-dung sample.
Guide learners to compare organic and inorganic plant nutrient sources and explain how their physical characteristics influence the way they are applied to crops. Learners discuss examples such as compost being worked into the soil and NPK fertiliser being applied in measured quantities around plants according to instructions.
For cow dung, learners must not open, touch or directly handle the sample. The Sealed cow-dung sample is used only for observation and discussion. If practical manure application is demonstrated, it must be done only by the teacher using clean, prepared manure that is suitable for demonstration.
During the teacher demonstration, the teacher wears appropriate protective gloves, avoids direct skin contact and keeps learners at a safe observing distance. Learners observe how the nutrient source is applied around a plant without touching the manure or contaminated tools.
After the demonstration, the teacher safely cleans or stores the materials used. Learners and teacher wash their hands thoroughly with soap and clean water before leaving the activity area.
In groups, learners prepare a simple comparison table showing the nutrient source, whether it is organic or inorganic, its physical characteristics and an appropriate method of application to plants.
Assessment: 1. State two physical characteristics of an organic plant nutrient. 2. State two physical characteristics of an inorganic fertiliser. 3. Explain one safe way of applying compost or manure to plants. 4. State two safety precautions that should be observed when handling animal manure. | Phase 3plenary / reflections Use peer discussion and effective questioning to find out from learners what they have learnt during the lesson.
