Guide learners to use partitioning (or expanded form) and place value system to add whole and decimal numbers. Example: i) Add 785 and 9,342 785 = 700 + 80 + 5 + 9,342 = 9000 + 300 + 40 + 2 10,127 = 9000 + 1000 + 120 + 7 ii) Add 327.6 and 54.13 327.60 = 300 + 20 + 7 + 6/10 + 0/100 + 54.13 = 50 + 4 + 1/10 + 3/100 381.73 = 300 + 70 + 11 + 7/10 + 3/100

They add the numbers by combining place-value groups and exchanging ten of one unit for one of the next unit, then repeat by removing groups to model subtraction. Learners use the Ghana cedi play notes for a local market example involving a total and change. Guide learners to use the distributive property to multiply whole numbers. Example: 325 by 15. = 325 × (10 + 5) = (325 × 10) + (325 × 5) = 3,250 + 1,625 = 4,875
Let learners investigate and determine basic division facts including divisibility test. (i) determine how a given number is divisible by 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10, etc.
For example, a number is divisible by 3 if the sum of its digits is divisible by 3. So, 72 is divisible by 3 because 7+2 = 9. Hence since 9 is divisible by 3, then 72 is divisible by 3.
also, to find out if a number is divisible by 7, take the last digit in the number then double it and subtract from the rest of the number. If the answer is 0 or a multiple of 7, then the number is divisible by 7.
So, 595 is divisible by 7 because 5 × 2 = 10. 59 – 10 = 49. Therefore, 595 is divisible by 7. | Phase 3plenary / reflections Use peer discussion and effective questioning to find out from learners what they have learnt during the lesson.
