Concrete-resource task: Set out these resources for each group: Fraction strips; Bottle tops; Graph paper. Learners manipulate the items to model the numbers or relationships and record or check their working during the task below. Guide learners to add mixed fractions, i.e. 22⁄5 and 12⁄3, we first add the whole numbers and then add the fractions; i.e. 2 + 1 + 2⁄5 + 2⁄3 = 3 + 6⁄15 + 10⁄15 = 3 + 16⁄15 = 316⁄15 = 61⁄15 = 41⁄15 Guide learners to subtract mixed fractions, i.e. 24⁄5 – 12⁄3; we first subtract the whole numbers and then subtract the fractions; i.e. (2 – 1) + 4⁄5 – 2⁄3 = 1 + 12−10⁄15 = 12⁄15 alternatively, we may change the mixed fractions to improper fractions first. i.e. 24⁄5 – 12⁄3 24⁄5 = 14⁄5, 12⁄3 = 5⁄3 = 14⁄5 – 5⁄3, change to equivalent fractions = 42⁄15 – 25⁄15 = 42−25⁄15 = 17⁄15 = 12⁄15 assessment Solve the following 1) 21⁄3 – 11⁄4 2) 15⁄6 + 37⁄8 3) 33⁄14 – 27⁄4 4) 83⁄10 + 73⁄5

Guide learners to solve word problems involving addition or subtraction of fractions. Example: i. 31⁄3 feet are cut off a board that is 121⁄4 feet long. How long is the remaining part of the board? i.e. 121⁄4 – 31⁄3 = (12 – 3) + 1⁄4 – 1⁄3 = 9 + 4−3⁄12 = 91⁄12 the remaining part of the board is 91⁄12 long.
