Subject: Computing
Class: Basic 7
Component 1
Technology in the community
Topic: Discuss the benefits of using technology tools in learning
| Strand: Introduction to computing | Sub-strand: Technology in the community |
| Indicator: B7.1.2.1.3. Discuss the benefits of using technology tools in learning. | Content Standard: B7.1.2.1. Demonstrate the use of Technology in the community |
| Performance Indicator: Identifying any three (3) benefits of technology tools that aid learning., Describing the benefits of technology tools that aid learning | T.L.R.(s): Desktop computer, Mobile phone, Calculator |
Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning Using questions and answers, review learners understanding in the previous lesson.
Share performance indicators and introduce the lesson. | Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment Groups operate the Desktop computer to open an offline learning document or spreadsheet, use the Mobile phone to view a teacher-provided offline learning resource and use the Calculator to check a mathematics problem. They rotate through the three tools and record a subject in which each tool improves learning. Learners compare speed, access, accuracy and limitations and demonstrate one responsible classroom use of every tool. | Phase 3plenary / reflections Reflection (10 mins) Use peer discussion and effective questioning to find out from learners what they have learnt during the lesson.
Take feedback from learners and summarize the lesson. |
Component 2
Technology in the community
Topic: Examine the negative impact of computers and computer use on the environment
| Strand: Introduction to computing | Sub-strand: Technology in the community |
| Indicator: B7.1.2.1.4 Examine the negative impact of computers and computer use on the environment | Content Standard: B7.1.2.1. Demonstrate the use of Technology in the community |
| Performance Indicator: Identifying any three (3) benefits of technology tools that aid learning., Describing the benefits of technology tools that aid learning | T.L.R.(s): Printed photographs of e-waste, Sealed examples of discarded computer parts, Clean de-energized teacher-supplied computer parts |
Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning Recap with learners to find out what they already know about green computing. | Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment Concrete-resource task: Set out these resources for each group: Printed photographs of e-waste; Sealed examples of discarded computer parts; Clean de-energized teacher-supplied computer parts. Learners study the printed and sealed examples without opening, dismantling or directly handling any unsafe electronic waste.
Let learners observe printed photographs showing how computers and other electronic devices are disposed of in different environments.
Guide learners to discuss the negative impact of computers and electronic waste on the environment. Examples include pollution from heavy metals and toxic substances, contamination of soil and water, and the environmental effects of improper dumping or burning of electronic waste.
Where physical examples are used, the teacher should provide only clean, de-energized and inspected computer parts with no exposed batteries, broken glass, leaking components, sharp edges or damaged circuit boards. Learners may observe and identify these safe parts under teacher supervision.
Engage learners to discuss the benefits of green computing. Examples include reducing energy consumption, reducing carbon emissions, extending the useful life of devices, reusing suitable equipment and disposing of electronic waste through approved recycling channels.
Assessment: 1. State two negative effects of electronic waste on the environment. 2. Explain two ways computers can be used in an environmentally responsible manner. 3. State one safe way of disposing of unwanted electronic equipment. | Phase 3plenary / reflections Ask learners how the lesson will benefit them in their daily lives.
Use peer discussion and effective questioning to find out from learners what they have learnt during the lesson. |
