Subject: Computing
Class: Basic 7

Component 1

Components of Computer

Topic: Examine the uses of the output devices

Strand: Introduction to computingSub-strand: Components of Computer
Indicator: B7.1.1.1.3. Examine the uses of the output devices:Content Standard: B7.1.1.1. Examine the parts of a computer
Performance Indicator: Learning how to identify and use output devices, Learning how to identify and use storage devicesT.L.R.(s): Computer monitor, Printer, Printed photographs of wearable displays
Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Using questions and answers, find out what learners already know about output devices. Share with learners the performance indicators.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Concrete-resource task: Set out these resources for each group: Computer monitor; Printer; Printed photographs of wearable displays. Learners inspect the hardware and printed examples, then operate or compare them during the computing task below. Engage learners to study printed photographs of output devices in use. Guide learners to demonstrate the use of output devices in a computer laboratory or classroom. Let learners explore the advantages and disadvantages of output devices.
Phase 3plenary / reflections
Reflection (10 mins) Use peer discussion and effective questioning to find out from learners what they have learnt during the lesson. Take feedback from learners and summarize the lesson. Ask learners in turns to demonstrate the use of output devices.

Strand: Introduction to computingSub-strand: Components of Computer
Indicator: B7.1.1.1.4 Examine full-sized external hard drives, hard drive speed, disk caching, Storage portable hard drives, Optical Discs and DrivesContent Standard: B7.1.1.1. Examine the parts of a computer
Performance Indicator: Learning how to identify and use output devices, Learning how to identify and use storage devicesT.L.R.(s): USB flash drive, Hard disk drive, Memory card
Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Recap with learners to find out what they already know about storage devices.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Concrete-resource task: Set out these resources for each group: USB flash drive; Hard disk drive; Memory card. Learners inspect the hardware and printed examples, then operate or compare them during the computing task below. Learners to discuss the features of hard drives/Optical Disc storage media. Explore the different write speeds of these storage devices. 1. sD cards will read and write at speeds of 12.5MB/s 2. a typical 7200 RPM HDD will deliver a read/write speed of 80-160MB/s 3. the write speed of 2.0 USB can be as slow as 4MB per second and as fast as 8MB/s. Explore the differences in the various Hard Disk Drives (HDD).
Phase 3plenary / reflections
Use peer discussion and effective questioning to find out from learners what they have learnt during the lesson. Ask learners how the lesson will benefit them in their daily lives.
