Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Review learners understanding in the previous lesson using questions and answers
Engage learners to play games and sing songs to begin the lesson.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Display a potted green plant and explain that plants use carbon dioxide during food production and release oxygen in daylight. Learners identify why plants are important in the local environment. Show a charcoal piece in a clear jar as a familiar carbon-containing material without burning it. Discuss that burning carbon-containing fuels can release carbon dioxide, but no combustion is performed in class. Groups sort printed carbon-dioxide use-and-effect cards into useful applications and environmental or health effects. Learners do not inhale any gas or handle flames.
