Send learners out of the class for a small exercise. Divide class into groups to play a type of football called “small poles” Ask learners to count each pole with their feet span four times. Introduce the lesson on the field by alerting learners how the poles were measured. Bring measuring bowls, cups, buckets etc. to class. Call students to fill each item with water. Learners record the volume of each item. Learners use raffia string and measuring sticks to compare the length of classroom objects with repeated non-standard units. They record the number of units and discuss why consistent units give fair comparisons. Groups use assorted empty cups and bottles to compare the capacity of larger clean containers. They count each cupful or bottleful and record results without drinking from the materials. Use bottle tops and number cards to model addition and subtraction within 1000 including unknown values. Learners decompose numbers into hundreds, tens and ones before writing and solving matching number sentences.
