Introduction

Revision ties together everything you have learned about the parts of a computer and how to use its operating system. Use these notes to test yourself.

1. Computer Components

Key ideas on components
TopicKey points
fourth generationmicroprocessors, VLSI, PCs, GUIs, networks, portable devices
input devicesmanual (keyboard, mouse, touchscreen) and automatic (barcode reader, sensors)
output devicessoft copy (monitor, speakers) and hard copy (printers, plotters)
storage devicesHDD, SSD, flash drives, memory cards, CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray; capacity and speed

2. Computer Systems

Key ideas on Windows
TopicKey points
desktopwallpaper, icons, Recycle Bin, taskbar
Start menuapps list, pinned apps, tiles (Windows 10)
taskbarStart, search, Task View, taskbar buttons, notification area, Show desktop

A complete desktop computer with monitor, keyboard and mouse
Figure 1: Desktop computer Draw a computer system and label two input, two output and one storage device.

3. Practical Review

  1. Connect the keyboard and mouse to the desktop computer.
  2. Identify each device and state whether it is input, output or storage.
  3. Demonstrate one correct use of each device, such as typing your name and opening a folder.
  4. State one care or safety rule for the workstation.

4. Self-Test Questions

Classify devices

Classify these devices: scanner, projector, SSD, microphone, plotter.

  1. Scanner: input (enters images).
  2. Projector: output (displays on a wall).
  3. SSD: storage (keeps data).
  4. Microphone: input (records sound).
  5. Plotter: output (prints large drawings).

Answer: Input: scanner, microphone. Output: projector, plotter. Storage: SSD.

5. Linking the Topics

Every computing topic is connected. Input devices bring data in, the processor works on it, output devices show the results and storage devices keep them. The operating system, such as Windows, manages all of these and lets you organise your work into files and folders.

6. Common Mix-Ups to Avoid

Learners often confuse RAM with storage. RAM is temporary working memory that loses its data when the power goes off, while a hard disk or SSD keeps data permanently. Another common mix-up is between copying and moving files: copying leaves the original in place, while moving takes it away. Finally, remember that a touchscreen is both an input and an output device, because it displays information and also accepts touch.

New words

revision
Going over work to remember it better.
component
A part of a computer system.
operating system
Software that manages the computer and its programs.
classify
To arrange items into groups.

Summary

  • Components include input, output, processing and storage devices.
  • Windows features include the desktop, Start menu, taskbar, thumbnails and user accounts.
  • File management involves creating, naming, copying, moving and deleting files.

Class activity: Device Demonstration

Term Revision

Introduction

The second half of the term focused on how technology affects learning, the environment and our health, and on making presentations. Let us review these ideas.

1. Technology in the Community

Key ideas on technology in the community
TopicKey points
technology toolscalculators, Scratch, Lightbot, GeoGebra, PhET, Google Earth, e-books
benefitsaccess to information, self-paced learning, feedback, collaboration, creativity
e-wastediscarded electronics containing lead, mercury and cadmium
responsible practicesswitch off, sleep mode, reduce, reuse, repair, refurbish, recycle; Act 917
upcyclingmaking useful items from clean, safe computer parts

2. Health and Safety

Key ideas on health and safety
TopicKey points
health hazardseye strain, RSI, carpal tunnel syndrome, back pain, hearing damage, sleep problems
safety measuresno overloading, CO₂ extinguisher, no food or drinks, safe cables, online safety
posture and habitsstraight back, feet flat, wrists straight, 20-20-20 rule, breaks
workstationscreen at eye level, adjustable chair, no glare; eliminate, reduce, then habits
Old electronic devices collected for recycling
Figure 2: E-waste collection Draw a poster on responsible disposal of e-waste.

3. Presentation Software

Key ideas on PowerPoint
TopicKey points
presentation softwarecreates slide shows; PowerPoint, Google Slides, Impress, Keynote
interfaceribbon, slide thumbnails, slide pane, notes pane, status bar, views
themes and templatesDesign tab; consistent look; ready-made presentations
Insert tabNew Slide, Table, Pictures, Shapes, SmartArt, Chart, Symbol
Font groupfont, size, bold, italic, underline, colour, Change Case (Shift + F3)

4. Linking the Topics

The topics connect in real life. When you prepare a presentation on e-waste, you use technology tools for learning, you sit correctly at the workstation to protect your health, and you present information that helps protect the environment. Thinking in this way helps you understand why each topic matters.

5. Revision Tips

  • Practise on a computer whenever possible, not just from notes.
  • Make flash cards for shortcuts such as Ctrl + C, Ctrl + V, F2, F5 and Shift + F3.
  • Draw and label diagrams such as the taskbar, the PowerPoint window and a safe workstation.
  • Explain each topic to a friend in your own words.

New words

e-waste
Discarded electrical and electronic equipment.
ergonomics
Designing workplaces to fit the human body.
shortcut
A key combination that performs a command quickly.
upcycling
Turning old items into more valuable ones.

Summary

  • Technology tools bring many benefits, but e-waste must be managed responsibly.
  • Healthy posture, breaks and safe workstations prevent computing-related disorders.
  • PowerPoint is used to create presentations with themes, inserted objects and formatted text.

Class activity: Revision Relay

  1. Each group answers five quick questions on one topic and passes the sheet on.
  2. Groups check answers using these notes.
  3. Each learner writes two topics they need to revise further.
