Introduction
Computing is a practical subject. In this lesson you will show what you can do on the computer, from managing files to building a short presentation.
1. Practical Tasks Checklist
| Task | What to show |
|---|---|
| start up and log in | switch on, log in to your account |
| desktop features | open an app from Start; use preview thumbnails |
| file management | create a folder, save a file in it, rename and copy it |
| storage | copy the folder to a flash drive and eject it safely |
| PowerPoint | create a three-slide presentation with a theme |
| insert and format | add a picture and a special character; format the title |
| shut down | close programs and shut down properly |
2. Working Safely During Practicals
During the practical review, apply health and safety measures: adjust the chair and screen, sit with good posture, keep food and drinks away and handle devices gently. Before leaving, tidy the workstation for the next user. These habits are part of what the teacher assesses.
3. A Short Practical Task
Practical task
Create a folder called "JHS1 Practical", make a three-slide presentation about your favourite food inside it, and copy the folder to a flash drive.
- Open File Explorer, go to Documents, right-click, choose New, Folder and name it "JHS1 Practical".
- Open PowerPoint, choose a theme and type the title on slide 1.
- Add two new slides with a picture and three points about the food.
- Insert a special character, such as ©, on the last slide.
- Save the presentation in the "JHS1 Practical" folder.
- Copy the folder to the flash drive and eject it safely.
Answer: A saved presentation inside a correctly named folder, also copied safely to a flash drive.
4. Self-Assessment
After the task, ask yourself: Did I complete every step? Did I name files clearly? Did I save my work regularly? Did I follow safety rules? Record one skill you are confident in and one skill you need to practise more.
5. Common Errors
Common errors in practicals include saving files in the wrong folder, forgetting to save before closing, removing the flash drive without ejecting, and using text too small to read on slides. Checking each step carefully prevents these errors.

Introduction
Answering practice questions helps you check your understanding and prepare for the examination with confidence.
1. Answering Questions Well
- Read each question twice and underline the instruction word, such as "state", "explain" or "describe".
- Use correct computing terms, such as "input device", "thumbnail" and "e-waste".
- Give examples from your school and community.
- For diagrams, draw clearly and label with straight lines.
- Check your answers before handing in.
2. Sample Questions and Model Answers
Practice question 1
State three differences between HDDs and SSDs.
- HDDs use spinning platters; SSDs use memory chips.
- SSDs are faster than HDDs.
- HDDs are cheaper per gigabyte and noisier; SSDs are silent and less easily damaged.
Answer: Moving parts, speed and cost or durability.
Practice question 2
Explain three health hazards of using computers and how to prevent each.
- Eye strain: follow the 20-20-20 rule and reduce glare.
- Back pain: sit with a straight, supported back and adjust the chair.
- RSI: keep wrists straight and take regular breaks.
Answer: Each hazard is matched with a clear preventive measure.
Practice question 3
Describe how to insert a picture into a PowerPoint slide.
- Click the slide where you want the picture.
- Click the Insert tab and choose Pictures.
- Find the picture, select it and click Insert.
- Drag a corner handle to resize it.
Answer: Insert tab, Pictures, select, Insert, resize from the corner.
3. Holiday Practice
Over the holidays, keep your skills alive. If you have access to a computer or phone, practise typing, organise your files and make a short presentation about your holiday. Help family members dispose of old electronics responsibly, and teach someone at home the correct posture for using a phone or computer.
4. Managing Examination Time
Before you start writing, look through the whole paper and note how many marks each question carries. Spend more time on questions with more marks. Answer the questions you know well first to build confidence, then return to the harder ones. Leave about five minutes at the end to read through your answers and correct mistakes.
