Class: Basic 4
Strand: CyclesSub-strand: Earth Science
Indicator (code): B4.2.1.3.1 Demonstrate the, process of evapotranspirationContent Std (code): B4.2.1.3 Show understanding of the roles of, condensation, evaporation, transpiration and, precipitation in the hydrological (water) cycle
Performance Indicator: Learners can demonstrate the process of, evapotranspirationCore Competencies: Problem Solving skills; Critical Thinking; Justification of Ideas;
T.L.R.(s): young potted maize plant, clear plastic bag with rubber band, observation cards and pencilsKeywords: Evapotranspiration, Earth, Cycles
Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Engage learners to sing songs and play games to get them ready for lesson. Use questions and answers to review learners understanding in the previous lesson.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Learners inspect the dry leaf surfaces of a young potted maize plant. With teacher guidance, cover a leafy part using a clear plastic bag with rubber band without damaging the stem and place the plant in a safe bright area. After an appropriate interval, learners observe droplets inside the bag and discuss how water vapour leaves plant leaves through transpiration and then condenses on the plastic. Groups use observation cards and pencils to draw the setup, record what changed and explain the evidence for transpiration.
Phase 3plenary / reflections
Ask questions to review learners understanding of the lesson Learners to tell what was interesting about the lesson.
