| Performance Indicator: Learners can identify things that make water impure and describe, the properties of air | Core Competencies: Problem Solving skills; Critical Thinking;, Justification of Ideas; |
| T.L.R.(s): sealed local water samples in clear bottles, clean cotton cloth, inflated balloon | Keywords: Impure, Water, Earth |
Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning Have learners to sing songs and recite familiar rhymes relating to the lesson WATER WE DRINK Water we drink and water we use, To wash our vessels, our clothes and shoes. With water we bathe, and wash our hair. But what do we do, when it isn’t there! Shut the tap when you don’t need it, Don’t let water overflow. When you learn to save water, You will have enough and more.
Teacher brings a bag into the classroom that contains an object that has a connection to the lesson. Then it is passed around and learners try to determine what is in the bag just by feeling it. The student who guess right wins, and hence introduce the lesson.
Learners to recite poems about Air
AIR We cannot see the air We can only feel the air When it moves, it is cool When it stops, it is warm To keep the air clean Plant many trees green | Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment Learners inspect sealed local water samples in clear bottles and compare visible colour and particles without opening or tasting them. Place clean cotton cloth over an empty container and demonstrate that cloth may remove some visible particles but does not by itself make polluted water safe to drink.
Discuss local causes of water pollution and explain that unsafe water may cause diarrhoea, stomach pain and dehydration. Learners suggest ways to protect community water sources.
Use an inflated balloon to show that air occupies space and can push objects. Learners connect this observation with ways fresh air enters a classroom and present one safe ventilation action. | Phase 3plenary / reflections What have we learnt today? Things that make water impure Ask learners to summarize the main points in the lesson Learners talk about what was interesting and made meaning to them in the lesson and what they will change and do differently
