Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Engage learners to sing songs and recite familiar rhymes LITTLE POLLY FLINDERS Little Polly flinders Sat among the cinders Warming her pretty little toes! Her mother came and caught her, And whipped her little daughter, For spoiling her nice new clothes.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Read the printed Ghanaian story or dialogue aloud while learners listen, let them arrange the printed story-sequence cards to show key information, and have them record brief answers in exercise books with pencils. Activate the previous knowledge of the learners by making them think- pair-share with their friends, the cover illustrations and pictures accompanying the story. Have them predict the story. Read a story. Pause at vantage points and have learners talk about the content of the text. Have the learners answer simple questions based on the text. Have them role-play the events in the story.

Ask learners to tell you what they have learnt and what they will like to learn in the next lesson. Have learners to read and spell the key words on the board

Learners name the familiar Ghanaian objects in the printed pictures, match their sounds or meanings to the printed word cards, and build further examples on the chalkboard with chalk. Have learners repeat the sight words aloud. Have learners use the sight words in meaningful sentences. Tell a story and have learners identify sight words in the story. Using word and sentence cards, have learners use the sight words in meaningful sentences, e.g. the: The boy is my friend.

Learners copy and arrange examples from the printed alphabet or word cards, then practise the target writing neatly in their exercise books with pencils. Let learners mention their favorite game. Let learners select one game and talk about the how it is played. Engage learners to recite a few rhymes with actions Have a variety of age appropriate books for learners to make a choice from.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Learners read the Ghanaian storybook and the printed passage about a Ghanaian community, then record the target ideas or reading responses in exercise books with pencils. Using book tease or book talk, introduce the reading/ library time. Introduce picture or wordless books, pop-up and flip-the-page texts to learners. Using word and sentence cards, encourage them to read individually and in pairs, and provide support and encouragement.
