Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Draw or print pictures of some common sight words with numbers on them and stick them on the classroom wall. Have learners to make a list of the words. They can do it in groups and within a given time to create competition.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Learners study the printed photographs of familiar Ghanaian settings, select suitable expressions from the printed dialogue cards, and use the locally made role-play props to practise the conversation. Demonstrate Yes/No questions and their responds. Drill learners on the questions and responses. Let pair of learners ask and answer questions, e.g. Pupil A: Is this a book? Pupil B: Yes, it is / No, it isn’t.
Phase 3plenary / reflections
Have learners answer with YES/NO. 1. Do you like rice?........... 2. Have you eaten?............ 3. Did you bath?................. 4. Does it often rain here?....... 5. Has he ever been beaten?..... 6. Is he a man?.............

Comprehension

Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Engage learners in the “Change your style” game Teacher calls out different actions for learners to act. Student have to mimic the action continuously without breaking. After a while teacher speeds up the tempo. For example: jumping, jumping, crazy dance, heading a ball etc.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Learners examine the Ghanaian newspaper and printed local product advertisement for the target text features, then record and compare their findings in exercise books with pencils. Have a variety of age appropriate books for learners to make a choice from. Using word and sentence cards, learners to read level appropriate texts independently, with minimal support from peers or teacher. Encourage them to ask and answer factual and inferential questions about the texts to enhance comprehension. Provide feedback to learners where necessary.
Phase 3plenary / reflections
Ask learners to tell you what they have learnt and what they will like to learn in the next lesson. Have learners to read and spell the key words on the board

Controlled Writing

Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Engage learners to sing songs and recite rhymes
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Display the printed substitution-table chart and read the choices in each column with learners. In pairs, learners select and arrange the movable sentence strips to form complete meaningful sentences, read them aloud and change one part to create new sentences. They copy their best sentences into exercise books with pencils and check capitals, spacing and full stops.

Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Play games and recite rhymes that learners are familiar with to begin the lesson. Ask learners questions to review their understanding in the previous lesson.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Learners place the calabash in, on, under, beside and behind the woven basket and select the matching printed position-word cards. Pairs take turns changing the position, asking where the calabash is and replying in a complete sentence. Learners then order the cards and spell the short prepositions aloud.
Phase 3plenary / reflections
Give learners task to complete while you go round the class to support those who might need extra help. Have learners to read and spell some of the keywords in the lesson

Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Have a variety of age appropriate books for learners to make a choice from.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Learners read the Ghanaian storybook and the printed passage about a Ghanaian community, then record the target ideas or reading responses in exercise books with pencils. Using book tease or book talk, introduce the reading/ library time. Introduce picture or wordless books, pop-up and flip-the-page texts to learners. Using word and sentence cards, encourage them to read individually and in pairs, and provide support and encouragement.
Phase 3plenary / reflections
Have learners to read and spell the key words on the board Learners to draw parts of the story they read
