Term Project: Building a Digital Project

In this topic you will apply the term's learning through digital project work, using computing concepts, ICT tools and safe technology practices.

By the end of these notes you should be able to:

  • Plan a digital project
  • Create digital products using ICT tools
  • Apply safe and responsible practices

What you already know

Term Project

Introduction

This project brings together everything you have learned this term, and applies it to a real need.

1. Project Options

Project options
OptionOutputSkills used
community solutiona proposal with flowchart and wireframesproblem solving
user guidean illustrated documentWord, screenshots
safety campaignposters and slideshealth and safety
technology trendsa short reportresearch
storage guidea comparison tablehardware knowledge
school surveyan online or paper formdata

2. Setting Goals

Begin by stating your purpose and audience. Who will use your work? What should they be able to do afterwards? For instance: "This guide will help Basic 7 learners to take screenshots." A clear goal keeps your project focused. Then list what you need, such as computers, internet access, data and permission. If computers are limited, plan to share them, or do parts of your work on paper first.

3. Roles and Timeline

Sample roles
RoleTask
project managerkeeps the group on schedule
researcherfinds and checks information
designerprepares layouts and images
writerdrafts the content
testertests the product with users
Students working on a computer project
Figure 1: Group computer project Write your project's purpose and audience.

4. Finding Reliable Information

Use several trustworthy sources. Check who wrote the information, when it was published and whether others agree with it. Be careful with AI chatbots: they can be helpful, but they might produce wrong facts. Always verify information, and do your own thinking and writing. Copying from a chatbot and calling it your own work is dishonest, just as copying from a book is. Keep a list of your sources.

5. File Organisation and Safety

  1. Create one project folder.
  2. Use clear file names with dates.
  3. Save often and keep a backup.
  4. Ask permission before using people's photos.
  5. Check facts, spelling and credits.
  6. Use correct posture and take breaks.

Save versions as you go along, such as Guide_v1 and Guide_v2, so that you can return to an earlier draft. Use the health and safety ideas from this term when you work. Your group should sit comfortably, take turns on the computer and take breaks. If you collect information from people, keep it private and only use it for this project.

Term Project

Introduction

Your plan is ready. Now it is time to build, using the tools you have mastered.

1. Drafting

  1. Write an outline.
  2. Draft the content.
  3. Add headings and pictures.
  4. Insert screenshots with captions.
  5. Check for accuracy.
  6. Ask someone to review the draft.

A first draft does not need to be perfect. Get your ideas down, and then improve them. Use styles for headings, so that your document looks consistent and Word can make a table of contents.

2. Using Your Tools

Tools for the project
TaskTool
writingWord or Google Docs
slidesPowerPoint or Google Slides
tables and budgetExcel or Google Sheets
surveyGoogle Forms or paper forms
imagescamera, Paint, screenshots
diagramsshapes in Word or draw.io

3. Collaborating

Cloud tools let several people work on the same document at once. They also keep version history, so you can see past changes. Comments help you to give feedback without changing the text. Respect others' work, and discuss changes before you delete them. If your school has no internet, pass a flash drive between group members and keep a simple record of who has made which changes.

Figure 2: Working together online Write a short review of a group member's work.

4. Testing with Users

Ask someone from your audience to try your product while you watch quietly. Did they follow your guide without help? Which step confused them? Ask for honest opinions. Then improve your work. Testing a guide with a Basic 7 learner may reveal that you have used a difficult word. Testing a poster may show that the text is too small to read from a distance.

5. Checking the Final Product

Final checks
ItemQuestion
accuracyAre the facts correct?
clarityIs it easy to understand?
designIs the layout consistent?
creditsAre sources named?
privacyIs personal information protected?
filesIs it saved in the right format?

Save the final version, and export a PDF if it needs to be shared widely, because a PDF keeps its layout. Check its size. Make one more backup. Then prepare to present your work next week. Take pride in what you have produced.
