B9.1.1.1.1 – Practice good grooming

Introduction

People form a first impression of you within seconds. Before you say a word, your appearance and your cleanliness have already said something.

1. What Is Grooming?

Good grooming: Keeping your body, hair and clothes clean, neat and suited to the occasion.

Good grooming is not about being rich or wearing expensive clothes. A person in a plain, clean, well-ironed shirt looks better than someone in costly clothes that are dirty. Grooming grows out of personal hygiene, which is what you do to keep your body clean and healthy. Hygiene comes first. A neat hairstyle will not help much if the person has body odour or dirty fingernails.

2. Areas of Grooming

4. Grooming and Adolescence

As you pass through adolescence, your body produces more sweat and oil. This is why daily bathing and clean underwear become especially important. Boys may begin to shave, and they should use clean razors and never share them. Girls should keep up good hygiene during menstruation, changing pads regularly. Sharing items such as combs, razors and towels can spread skin infections and blood-borne diseases, and so they should be avoided. In salons and barbering shops, tools should be cleaned and disinfected between customers.

5. Costs of Poor Grooming

Poor grooming can lead to lost opportunities. An employer might choose another applicant, and customers might go to a cleaner shop. It could also lead to infections, such as ringworm or head lice, and to tooth decay. People with poor hygiene might be avoided or teased. Teasing is unkind, of course, but you can help a friend by speaking gently in private and offering practical advice.

B9.1.1.1.1 – Practice good grooming

Introduction

You would not wear the same clothes to a wedding, a farm and a job interview. Good grooming means knowing what suits each situation.

1. Dressing for the Occasion

Grooming for different occasions
OccasionSuitable grooming
schoolclean uniform, polished shoes, neat hair
workshopoveralls, covered shoes, hair tied back
kitchenapron, hair covered, short clean nails, no jewellery
interviewsmart clothes, neat hair, light perfume
church or mosquemodest clothing, respectful dress
funeralsblack, red or white, as custom requires
traditional ceremonieskente or cloth worn correctly

2. Grooming for Work

Different jobs have different grooming rules. Nurses and food workers must keep their nails short, tie back their hair and avoid jewellery that could carry germs. Bank staff and receptionists dress formally, as they represent their employer. Mechanics wear overalls, and they keep their hair short or tied back, because hair can be caught in machines. A uniform helps with safety and hygiene, and also tells customers who you are.

3. Personal Care Routines

  1. Morning: bathe, brush your teeth, comb your hair and dress.
  2. Daytime: wash your hands and tidy your clothes.
  3. Evening: bathe, wash your socks and underwear, and prepare your clothes.
  4. Weekly: trim your nails, wash your hair and polish your shoes.
  5. Monthly: check your clothes for repairs and sort your wardrobe.

Routines become habits. Over time, you will no longer need to think about them. Plan your time, so that you are not rushing and looking untidy in the morning.

4. Caring for Clothes and Shoes

Clothes last longer when you care for them. Sort light and dark colours before washing, and read the care label. Mend small tears quickly. Air shoes, and rotate them if you own more than one pair. Iron clothes on the correct setting, and do not leave the iron on when it is not in use. Good care saves money, which is important for a family budget.

5. Culture and Respect

Grooming varies between cultures and religions. Some Muslim women wear the hijab, and some Rastafarians wear dreadlocks. Northern Ghanaians may wear fugu smocks, and Akan chiefs wear kente. Respect these choices. What matters is that you are clean, neat and suitably dressed for the setting. School rules should be followed, and if you have a concern, raise it politely.
