4. Living the Lessons

The value of worship is seen in daily conduct. A person who prays faithfully but cheats in the market has not truly learned from worship. Religious teachers in all three faiths stress that worship should make people more honest, kind, disciplined and peaceful. The prophet Amos condemned people who held religious feasts while oppressing the poor (Amos 5:21–24).

5. Lessons for Learners

Learners can apply these lessons in school: being punctual, keeping clean, respecting teachers, sharing with needy classmates, being honest in examinations and living in unity with learners of all backgrounds.

6. Worship and Community Values

When people worship together regularly, they learn to live as a community. They greet one another, celebrate births and marriages, comfort the bereaved and help members in need. Churches and mosques run schools, clinics and welfare programmes, while traditional festivals bring sons and daughters home to contribute to development projects. In this way, worship builds caring and responsible communities.

Indicator
B7.2.1.1.4 – Explain the significance of prayer

Introduction

Before an examination, during sickness, at meals and at the start of a journey, people pray. Prayer is one of the most common religious acts in Ghana.

1. What Is Prayer?

Prayer: Communicating with God through words, thoughts or songs to praise Him, thank Him, confess sins or ask for help.

2. Types of Prayer

thanksgivingthanking God for blessingsthanking God after a safe journey
supplication (petition)asking God for one's own needsasking for good health
intercessionpraying for otherspraying for the sick or the nation

3. Prayer in the Three Religions

Christians pray in Jesus' name, privately or in church; Jesus taught His disciples the Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6:9–13). Muslims perform Salat five times daily and make personal du'a. Traditional believers pray through libation, calling on God, the gods and the ancestors for rain, health, children and peace.

4. Significance of Prayer

  • It brings believers closer to God.
  • It gives peace, hope and courage in difficult times.
  • It expresses gratitude for God's blessings.
  • It helps believers confess and turn away from wrongdoing.
  • It builds unity when people pray together.
  • It shows dependence on God.

5. Conditions for Effective Prayer

The three religions teach that prayer should be sincere, humble and accompanied by right living. Christians are taught to pray with faith and to forgive others (Mark 11:25). Muslims must be clean and have the right intention. Traditional believers must keep taboos and be at peace with the community. Prayer also needs patience, because answers may not come immediately or in the way we expect.

6. Prayer in Ghanaian Public Life

Prayer is part of public life in Ghana. Parliament opens its sittings with prayer. School assemblies begin with prayer. National days such as Independence Day include prayers by Christian, Muslim and traditional leaders. A National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving has also been observed on 1st July. These practices show how deeply prayer is valued in Ghanaian society.
