Introduction
How do we describe someone we cannot see? Christians, Muslims and traditional believers all speak of God through His qualities, such as His power, love and goodness. These qualities are called attributes.
1. What Are Attributes of God?
Attributes of God: The qualities or characteristics that describe the nature of God, such as His power, knowledge, love and holiness.
Because God cannot be seen, believers come to know Him through what He does and what their holy books and traditions teach about Him. Attributes help us to understand who God is and how we should relate to Him.
2. Attributes of God in the Bible
| Attribute | Meaning | Bible reference |
|---|---|---|
| omnipotent | all-powerful; nothing is too hard for Him | Jeremiah 32:17 |
| omniscient | all-knowing; He knows everything | Psalm 139:1–4 |
| omnipresent | present everywhere at the same time | Psalm 139:7–10 |
| love | He loves all people | 1 John 4:8; John 3:16 |
| holy | pure and without sin | Isaiah 6:3 |
| merciful | He forgives and shows compassion | Psalm 103:8 |
| just | He judges fairly | Deuteronomy 32:4 |
| eternal | without beginning or end | Psalm 90:2 |
| creator | He made the heavens and the earth | Genesis 1:1 |
3. The Trinity
Christians believe in one God who exists as three persons: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ) and God the Holy Spirit. This is called the Holy Trinity. The Father is seen as Creator, the Son as Saviour and the Holy Spirit as Helper and Comforter.
4. How Christians Experience God's Attributes
Christians say they experience God's love through answered prayers, the care of family and the gift of Jesus. They see His power in creation, such as the sun, rain and growth of crops. They feel His mercy when they confess their sins and are forgiven. These experiences strengthen their faith.
5. Names and Titles of God
The Bible uses many titles for God, such as "Lord", "Almighty", "Father", "Shepherd" (Psalm 23) and "King of kings". Each title points to an attribute: "Shepherd" shows His care and guidance, while "Almighty" shows His power.
6. Why Knowing God's Attributes Matters
Knowing God's attributes shapes how Christians live. Because God is all-knowing, they try to be honest even when no one is watching. Because He is loving and merciful, they trust Him in difficult times and forgive others. Because He is just, they believe that wrongdoing will be judged and good deeds rewarded. In this way, belief about God becomes a guide for daily behaviour at home, in school and in the community.

- B7.1.1.1.1 – Explain the nature of God through His attributes in the three major religions
Introduction
Muslims call God Allah and traditional believers in Ghana have many names for the Supreme Being, such as Onyankopɔn, Mawu and Naawuni. Each religion describes His greatness in its own way.
1. Attributes of Allah in Islam
Muslims believe that Allah is one (Tawhid), with no partner or equal. The Qur'an describes Him through ninety-nine beautiful names (Asma'ul Husna). Each name reveals an attribute.
| Name | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Ar-Rahman | the Most Gracious |
| Ar-Rahim | the Most Merciful |
| Al-Khaliq | the Creator |
| Al-Alim | the All-Knowing |
| Al-Qadir | the All-Powerful |
| Al-Adl | the Just |
| Al-Ghaffar | the Forgiving |
| As-Salam | the Source of Peace |
Every chapter of the Qur'an except one begins with "Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim": "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful." This shows how important mercy is in the Islamic understanding of Allah.
2. God in African Traditional Religion
Traditional believers in Ghana believe in one Supreme Being who created the world. He is approached through lesser gods and the ancestors, but He is above them all.
| People | Name | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Akan | Onyankopɔn | the Great One |
| Akan | Ɔdomankoma | the Infinite Creator |
| Akan | Twereduampɔn | the Dependable One, on whom one leans |
| Ewe | Mawu | the Supreme God |
| Ga | Ataa Naa Nyɔŋmɔ | God, Father and Mother |
| Dagomba | Naawuni | God the Chief |
3. Attributes in Traditional Sayings
Traditional proverbs and drum language express God's attributes. The Akan say "Obi nkyerɛ abɔfra Nyame" (No one shows a child God), meaning God's existence is obvious to all. The adinkra symbol Gye Nyame ("except God") expresses the belief that God is supreme and all-powerful. The name Ataa Naa Nyɔŋmɔ shows that God cares for people like both a father and a mother.
4. Common Attributes
In all three religions, God is described as the Creator, all-powerful, all-knowing, eternal, merciful and just. These shared beliefs help Ghanaians of different faiths to live together in respect.
5. Allah's Attributes in Daily Muslim Life
Muslims remember Allah's attributes many times each day. Before eating, travelling or starting work, they say "Bismillah" (in the name of Allah). When something good happens, they say "Alhamdulillah" (praise be to Allah). When planning for the future, they say "Insha'Allah" (if Allah wills), showing belief that Allah is all-powerful and in control. Traditional believers likewise begin many activities by calling on Onyankopɔn or Mawu, showing their dependence on the Supreme Being.
