Term Revision in Career Technology
In this topic you will recall and summarise the main ideas of health and safety and materials for production covered during the term, and practise answering end-of-term questions.
By the end of these notes you should be able to:
- Recall the key ideas in health and safety
- Recall the key ideas about compliant, resistant, smart and modern materials and food commodities
- Apply the term's knowledge to practical and written questions
What you already know
- All topics covered in Career Technology this term
Copy everything that has a blue line on its left into your notebook. The other parts are for reading.

Introduction
Revision helps you link the term's topics together. Health, safety and materials are all connected, because the materials we use and the way we work affect our health and the environment.
1. Health and Safety
| Topic | Key points |
|---|---|
| health | complete physical, mental and social wellbeing |
| healthy living | balanced diet, exercise, rest, hygiene, avoiding drugs and negative peer pressure |
| personal hygiene | bathing, brushing teeth, hand washing, clean clothes, short nails |
| food hygiene | keeping food safe from production to consumption |
| workshop safety | causes of accidents, PPE, safety rules and signs, first aid, fire safety |
| environmental health | water, air, waste, sanitation, housing, vectors, noise; reduce, reuse, recycle |
2. Materials for Production
| Topic | Key points |
|---|---|
| compliant materials | flexible: paper, card, board, fabrics, leather, raffia |
| production of compliant materials | paper from pulp; fabric from fibre to yarn to cloth |
| resistant materials | hard and rigid: wood, metals, plastics, ceramics, glass |
| production of resistant materials | timber seasoning; plastics from crude oil; ceramics fired; glass melted and annealed |
| smart and modern materials | respond to light, heat, pressure or water; carbon fibre, Kevlar, reflective fabric |
| food commodities | raw or partly processed foods from plant and animal sources |
3. Linking the Topics
The topics of the term work together. A carpenter who chooses seasoned timber (resistant materials) must also wear goggles and keep the workshop tidy (safety). A food vendor who buys fresh commodities must also follow food hygiene and dispose of waste properly (environmental health). Thinking about these links helps you understand why each topic matters in real jobs.
4. Practical Review
In the practical review, you will identify a kente fabric offcut as a compliant material, take two measurements with a tape measure and record them accurately, and demonstrate when safety goggles must be worn. For each action, state one safe-work rule, such as "keep the tape measure retracted when not in use" or "wear goggles when cutting or drilling".
5. Revision Tips
- Revise a little every day rather than everything the night before.
- Make flash cards with a key word on one side and its meaning on the other.
- Explain a topic to a friend or family member; teaching others helps you remember.
- Practise drawing and labelling diagrams such as PPE, safety signs and production flowcharts.
- Test yourself with past questions and check your answers.
New words
- revision
- Going over work to remember it better.
- mind map
- A diagram linking ideas around a central topic.
- strand
- A major area of a subject.
- practical
- An activity done with real tools and materials.
Summary
- Health and safety covers health, hygiene, workshop safety and environmental health.
- Materials for production covers compliant, resistant, smart and modern materials and food commodities.
- The topics are linked in real jobs and daily life.
Class activity: Practical Review
- Identify a kente fabric offcut and state its material group.

Introduction
Practising questions before the examination helps you find out what you know well and what you need to revise again.
1. Answering Questions Well
- Read each question carefully and underline the key instruction word.
- "State" or "list" needs short points; "explain" or "describe" needs full sentences with reasons.
- Use correct technical terms, such as "seasoning", "vector" and "PPE".
- Give local examples where possible.
- Check your answers before you hand in your work.
2. Sample Questions and Model Answers
Practice question 1
State four causes of accidents in the workshop.
- Carelessness, such as running or playing.
- Wrong use of tools.
- Faulty tools and machines.
- Not wearing PPE.
Answer: Carelessness, wrong use of tools, faulty tools, not wearing PPE (also untidiness, poor lighting).
Practice question 2
Explain why timber is seasoned before use.
- Fresh timber contains a lot of water.
- As it dries in use, it shrinks, twists and splits, and it may rot.
- Seasoning removes water so the timber is stable, stronger and lighter.
Answer: Timber is seasoned to remove moisture so that it does not shrink, twist, split or rot.
Practice question 3
Classify these into plant and animal sources: yam, tilapia, cowpea, eggs.
- Yam: plant (tuber).
- Tilapia: animal (fish).
- Cowpea: plant (legume).
- Eggs: animal (poultry product).
Answer: Plant: yam, cowpea. Animal: tilapia, eggs.
3. Preparing for the Holidays
During the holidays, practise what you learned. Help keep your home and community clean, follow good hygiene, observe artisans such as carpenters and seamstresses at work and note the materials and safety equipment they use. Write your observations in your notebook to share next term.
4. Common Mistakes to Avoid
Many learners lose marks by giving one-word answers to "explain" questions, mixing up similar terms such as "compliant" and "resistant", or "ferrous" and "non-ferrous", and forgetting units in measurements. Others write examples that do not match the question, such as giving a compliant material when a resistant one was asked for. Reading the question twice and checking your answer against it prevents most of these mistakes.
New words
- model answer
- An example of a complete, correct answer.
- instruction word
- A word that tells you how to answer, such as "explain".
- technical term
- A special word used in a subject.
- artisan
- A skilled worker who makes things by hand.
Summary
- Read questions carefully and follow the instruction words.
- Use technical terms and local examples in your answers.
- Keep practising good health and safety habits during the holidays.
Class activity: Revision Quiz
- Answer ten quick questions covering health, safety and materials.
- Exchange books and mark using the model answers.
- Correct mistakes and note topics to revise again.
