Introduction

A school has 276 boys and 348 girls. How many pupils are there? We line up the numbers in columns and add.

1. Adding in Columns

Example

276 + 348 = ?

  2. Tens: 7 + 4 + 1 = 12. Write 2, carry 1 hundred.
  3. Hundreds: 2 + 3 + 1 = 6.

2. Subtracting in Columns

Example

532 − 178 = ?

  1. Ones: 2 − 8 cannot be done. Borrow 1 ten: 12 − 8 = 4.
  2. Tens: now 2 − 7 cannot be done. Borrow 1 hundred: 12 − 7 = 5.
  3. Hundreds: now 4 − 1 = 3.

Answer: 532 − 178 = 354

Tip: Check subtraction by adding: 354 + 178 = 532.

New words
