Strand: EnvironmentSub-strand: Environmental Issues
Indicator: B9.1.1.2.1. Assess global sources and the means, of conserving energyContent Standard: B9.1.1.2. Evaluate the sources and ways, of conserving energy
Performance Indicator: Learners can describe the processes and devices used for, measuring and metering energy consumption.T.L.R.(s): Sample ECG electricity-meter photograph, Printed appliance wattage labels, Calculator
Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Display a utility bill (preferably an electricity bill) to the class. Ask learners if they know what it represents and why households receive it every month. Share performance indicators with learners.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Groups read the display and units shown in the Sample ECG electricity-meter photograph. They sort the Printed appliance wattage labels from lower to higher power and select realistic daily operating times. Learners use the Calculator to estimate energy consumed by each appliance and compare the estimates with a household conservation target. They explain how meter readings and wattage information help families and businesses manage energy.
Phase 3plenary / reflections
Use peer discussion and effective questioning to find out from learners what they have learnt during the lesson

Strand: EnvironmentSub-strand: Environmental Issues
Indicator: B9.1.1.2.1. Assess global sources and the means, of conserving energyContent Standard: B9.1.1.2. Evaluate the sources and ways of, conserving energy
Performance Indicator: Learners can describe the advantages of energy, conservation and will educate others on its importance.T.L.R.(s): LED bulb, Switchable power strip, Printed energy-conservation action cards
Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Ask learners to brainstorm common ways they might waste energy in their daily lives (e.g., leaving lights on, using excessive water, not turning off electronics). Share performance indicators with learners.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Groups inspect the LED bulb and explain why efficient lighting reduces electricity demand. They demonstrate turning the Switchable power strip off after simulated appliance use. Learners sort the Printed energy-conservation action cards into home, school and community actions and select three for an outreach message. Each learner rehearses the demonstration and later reports how a family member or friend responded.
Phase 3plenary / reflections
