Week 3: Lesson Plan
Subject: Science
Class: Basic 8

Component 1

Separation Of Mixtures

Topic: Design and perform processes for separating kinds of mixtures

Strand: Diversity Of MatterSub-strand: Separation Of Mixtures
Indicator: B8.1.1.1.2 Design and perform processes for separating kinds of mixtures.Content Standard: B8.1.1.1. Demonstrate knowledge of types of mixtures, and understanding of the processes of scientific ways of separating the components of mixtures
Performance Indicator: Learners can identify types of mixtures by name and characteristicsT.L.R.(s): Sand-and-water mixture, Filter funnel with filter paper, Salt-water evaporation dish
Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Revise with learners on the previous lesson.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Groups pour the Sand-and-water mixture through the Filter funnel with filter paper and identify the residue and filtrate. The teacher places the Salt-water evaporation dish in a safe warm location or uses a teacher-controlled low heat source and learners observe solvent loss and salt recovery. Learners draw both setups, name each separation method and explain which physical property makes it work. Hot apparatus is handled only by the teacher.
Phase 3plenary / reflections
Use peer discussion and effective questioning to find out from learners what they have learnt during the lesson.

Performance Indicator: Learners can identify types of mixtures by name and characteristicsT.L.R.(s): Salt-water mixture, Simple distillation apparatus, Collecting beaker
Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Share learning indicators and introduce the lesson.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Learners identify the parts and flow path of the Simple distillation apparatus before heating begins. The teacher heats the Salt-water mixture while groups observe boiling, condensation and the liquid entering the Collecting beaker from a safe distance. Learners compare the collected water with the salt left behind and draw a labelled process diagram. Only the teacher handles the heat source, hot glassware and apparatus connections.
Phase 3plenary / reflections
Take feedback from learners and summarize the lesson.

Separation Of Mixtures

Performance Indicator: Learners can identify types of mixtures by name and characteristicsT.L.R.(s): Camphor-and-sand mixture, Covered evaporating dish, Printed sublimation-sequence chart
Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning
Revise with learners on the previous lesson. Share learning indicators and introduce the lesson.
Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment
Groups first inspect the sealed Camphor-and-sand mixture without touching or smelling it directly. The teacher warms it in the Covered evaporating dish in a ventilated area while learners observe from a safe distance. Learners arrange and annotate the Printed sublimation-sequence chart to show camphor changing from solid to vapour and depositing separately from sand. Iodine is not used and only the teacher handles heated material.
Phase 3plenary / reflections
Use peer discussion and effective questioning to find out from learners what they have learnt during the lesson. Take feedback from learners and summarize the lesson.
