Phase 1: Starterpreparing the brain for learning Play games and recite rhymes that learners are familiar with to begin the lesson. Ask learners questions to review their understanding in the previous lesson. | Phase 2: Mainnew learning including assessment Display a Ghana map and identify broad areas associated with historical trade items. Learners locate the forest belt and savannah belt and discuss how communities exchanged goods.
Groups inspect a tray of local barter-item samples and pictures such as salt, kola nuts, shea butter, pottery and cloth without tasting any item. They match each item to cowrie shells and source-area cards and place the match near the relevant area on the Ghana map.
Learners role-play a simple barter exchange and explain how cowrie shells later served as a medium of exchange.
